The first 72 hours of an incident are where containment either happens or doesn't. After that window, the conversation shifts from prevention to damage assessment. Organizations that understand this build their IR programs differently than ones that treat incident response as a compliance artifact.
Most incident response plans are written for orderly scenarios — a single compromised workstation, a contained phishing attempt, a neatly bounded data exposure. Real incidents are messier. Lateral movement is already in progress. Logs have been purged or modified. The initial access vector isn't obvious. Key personnel are unavailable. In those conditions, a plan that works on paper stops working fast.
Why the 72-hour frame matters
The 72-hour threshold is not arbitrary. It corresponds to the typical dwell time inflection point for ransomware-affiliated threat actors — the window between initial persistence establishment and payload deployment. Data from post-incident reviews across enterprise environments consistently shows that organizations that contain and isolate compromised systems within 72 hours of the initial breach avoid full-scale encryption events in roughly 80% of cases. Beyond that window, the probability of complete lateral movement across the environment increases sharply.
There's a regulatory dimension too. The SEC's cybersecurity disclosure rules require material incident disclosure within four business days. HIPAA breach notifications have prescribed timelines. Hour 0 to 4: Triage and initial scoping

Hour 4 to 24: Containment and evidence preservation
With the initial scope established, the focus shifts to preventing further spread while simultaneously preserving the forensic evidence needed to understand what happened. These two objectives are in tension. Containment actions — wiping and reimaging affected systems, resetting credentials at scale, blocking infrastructure — can destroy evidence. Preserving evidence — leaving compromised systems on the network to collect artifacts — creates ongoing risk.
The resolution is sequencing: capture before contain. Before any affected system is isolated or wiped, capture volatile memory, running process listings, active network connections, and relevant log data. This evidence preservation step takes 15 to 30 minutes per system and is frequently skipped under pressure. The organizations that skip it consistently struggle in post-incident litigation and regulatory inquiries because they cannot reconstruct what the attacker did or what data they accessed.
Credential reset scope is another decision point that needs pre-established criteria. Resetting all privileged credentials immediately is the safest approach but can trigger cascading authentication failures in complex environments. Having a tiered credential reset playbook — immediate resets for confirmed compromised accounts, accelerated resets for potentially compromised accounts, standard cycle for unaffected accounts — reduces operational disruption without sacrificing security.
Hour 24 to 72: Root cause, persistence hunting, and stakeholder management
By the 24-hour mark, containment should be in place. The work from here to 72 hours is investigation: identifying the initial access vector, hunting for additional persistence mechanisms, and determining the full scope of data access or exfiltration.
Persistence hunting is the most commonly underweighted activity in this window. Ransomware groups routinely establish multiple persistence mechanisms — scheduled tasks, registry run keys, backdoor user accounts, web shells on internet-facing systems — before deploying their primary payload. Organizations that remediate the obvious compromise without hunting for secondary persistence discover the secondary mechanism six weeks later, during what they believed was recovery. The second event is typically worse because it involves a fully re-compromised environment plus the operational overhead of a second response cycle.
Stakeholder communication in this window requires care. Internal communications need to be honest about what is known and unknown. External communications — customer notifications, regulatory filings, press statements — require legal review and precise language. The single most common IR communication failure is issuing public statements that make factual claims about scope or data access before the investigation has confirmed those facts. Corrections to those statements compound reputational damage significantly.
Building a plan that survives contact with reality
Effective IR plans share a structural characteristic: they are built around decision trees, not linear procedures. At each stage, the plan defines what questions need to be answered, who has authority to make which decisions, and what the decision options are. It doesn't assume a single path through the event.
Tabletop exercises are necessary but not sufficient. The highest-value IR preparation activity is technical runbooks — pre-built scripts and procedures for specific response actions that can be executed under pressure without requiring a senior analyst to think through the implementation. Memory acquisition, network isolation, credential reset at scale, log collection — all of these should have tested, documented runbooks that a mid-level analyst can execute in a crisis.
The organizations that handle incidents best spend more time before incidents happen preparing the technical infrastructure for response: centralized logging with sufficient retention, endpoint visibility tooling, network segmentation that makes lateral movement harder and containment faster, and established escalation paths that don't require finding someone's cell phone number at 2 AM.
Preparation is the only part of incident response that isn't reactive. That's where the 72-hour window is actually won or lost.
